100 points Jane Anson (Inside Bordeaux): "I've found a number of 2000s finally overtaking the 2001s this year, after a long time when the 2001 vintage was clearly showing better. But there are still moments when 2001 reigns, and this Vieux Château Certan is a case in point. Slowly unrolls, gathering in power as it goes, blackberry, damson and raspberry fruits, together with truffle, toasted almonds, tobacco leaf, ash. A great moment to open and enjoy this wine, made for sharing. Alcohol 13.5%. Drink: 2021-2035. (11/1/21)"
19/20 points Jancis Robinson, MW: "Magnum of gloriousness. Wonderfully fresh and lively still. Lifted nose with real drive. Masses of ripe Merlot character. Such elegance! Char, tar and polish. The wine was served in Zalto glasses and there seemed to be such a contrast between the delicacy of these wafer-thin glasses and the massive opulence and richness of this great wine. Drinking Window: 2012-2040. (4/2/16)"
