95 points Wojciech Bonkowski, MW (TimAtkin.com): "From all Terre Nere’s impressive 2019 reds, Marco De Grazia thinks this is the 'finest' and I agree, at least for the millimetric tannins and refined mineral aroma. A very complete expression of Nerello Mascalese and northern Etna’s terroir, with an silky, luxurious texture and purity of cherry fruit. (2023)"
94 points Eric Guido (Vinous): "The 2019 Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana slowly blossoms in the glass, unfurling with a layered and deep display of black cherries, licorice camphor and pine. Further swirling unlocks balsam herbs, plum sauce and dusty rose. It rushes the palate with a wave of silken textures, filling the senses with red currants, blueberry and hints of candied citrus. Fine tannins emerge through the finale, previously masked by ripe inner fruits, making for a lightly structured finish. A salty flourish gives way to hints of graphite and black licorice that linger on and on. While I’m accustomed to Calderara Sottana being one of the more structured and backward wines from the Terre Nere portfolio, the 2019 possesses an early appeal that I find quite attractive. That said, there’s an underlying power here that only cellaring will unlock. Drink: 2024-2034. (Jun 2021)"
94 points James Suckling: "If you love big Barolos, then this Etna red is a wine for you! Packed with ripe damson-plum character, this is rich, concentrated and well-structured with concentrated tannins that build on the moderately dry, silky finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. (8/22/21)"
94 points Wine & Spirits: "[$68 list] Vines up to a century old yielded the fruit for this smoky and meaty wine. Its black-cherry and plum flavors are deep and dense, laced with notes of roasted fennel and warm spice. A cool layer of graphite balances the wine’s peppery spice notes, the flavors all riding above a core of bristling minerality. The tannins were still smoothing out after three days, suggesting this has the structure and intensity to age gracefully. (Jun 2022)"
93 points Wine Spectator: "[$68 list] A fresh and elegant red, delivering delicate aromatics of violet and Mediterranean scrub, which transition to crushed black cherry and wild strawberry fruit, graphite and anise notes. This is backed by a spine of taut, well-meshed tannins, with a streak of tar-tinged minerality driving the finish. Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. Drink now through 2034. 750 cases made, 250 cases imported. (6/30/22)"
