94 points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): "[$35 list] The 2016 Chianti Rufina Vigneto Bucerchiale is a dark, brooding wine. Swaths of tannin make a first impression. Gradually, black cherry, plum, lavender, cloves, leather and menthol start to emerge. This potent, massively tannic Chianti Rufina is going to need a number of years to come around. There is plenty of depth, but the elements are totally put together. The 2016 finishes with tremendous substance and gravitas. I expect the 2016 will always remain a brute. Drink: 2026-2041. (Sep 2020)"
93 points and 'Value Pick of the Week,' Wine Spectator: "[$35 list] Dark and brooding, this red features ripe black cherry, blackberry, wild herb, earth and iron flavors. Gains in richness, density and ripeness what it loses in freshness, though shows fine balance and length. Drink now through 2028. (11/25/20)"
Two Glasses, Gambero Rosso: "Their Chianti Rufina Bucerchiale '16 earned a place in our finals... A complex bouquet sees notes of animal skins and leather, then bitter hints and finally clear, focused plum. On the palate it has vigor, nice acidic verve, well-integrated tannins and a full finish. (2020)"
Producer notes: "Bucerchiale is Selvapiana's flagship wine, a Riserva-level Chianti Rùfina crafted from the grapes of the estate's best vineyard, Bucerchiale. Francesco Giuntini, working with young winemaker Franco Bernabei on his second vintage at Selvapiana, created this special wine to be a long-aging benchmark of the best of Rùfina's and Selvapiana's Sangiovese. The wine is not a blend, as is normal with Chianti, but rather is pure Sangiovese to show that variety without any adornment by other blending components. First produced in 1979, Bucerchiale is made in only the best vintages, seven or eight times per decade."
