93 points and '#7 Top Whisky of 2018,' Whisky Advocate: "Bottling at cask strength, with only ‘barrier filtering’ to remove particles of char, rather than the standard chill-filtration process, gives the whisky greater integrity, with heightened aromas and flavors, and a satisfyingly sinewy mouthfeel not found in the standard 10 year old. Classic ‘burning hospital’ notes feature on the nose, along with peaty malt, vanilla, lemon, and brine. Charcuterie and cocoa powder add to the effect on the palate, before phenolic, medicinal, and sweet malt notes bring things to a close. A must-have Laphroaig that represents a big step up in intensity."

90-95 points and named to 'Top 50 Spirits of 2007' by Wine Enthusiast: "A veritable aromatic feast of maritime notes: seaweed, iodine, pine needle, matchstick and olive brine. The palate entry is full of mint, Sherry, pork rind, bacon fat, chimney soot and rancio tastes; by midpalate flavors of cocoa, coffee, pipe tobacco, chocolate-covered orange, marzipan and vanilla extract proliferate. Luscious and stupendously good."

Wine Spectator: "Peaty. You'll smell the peat immediately, but more rewards await. Honey candy beats out the expected peat on the palate, and when the smoke clears out come red fruit and hard candy flavors, especially with a splash of water. The long, honeyed finish brings bread dough. 57.8 abv. (2/28/11)"

The Tasting Panel: "Toasty, smoky and briny, with heady notes of iodine and tar as well as sweet vanilla. Stunningly complex but homogenous, with lush and beautifully focused flavors. Delicious and completely amazing."
