97 points Lisa Perrotti-Brown (Wine Advocate): "Deep garnet colored with a lingering touch of purple, the 2007 J Daniel Cuvee Cabernet Sauvignon has a beautifully expressive nose of warm cassis, blackberry compote and blueberry pie with touches of baking spices, vanilla pod, mocha, forest floor and black olives plus a waft of violets. Big, super rich and full-bodied, it delivers powerful, mouth-filling black fruit layers with a plush frame and invigorating freshness, finishing with incredible length and perfume. Drink: 2022-2050. (Aug 2018)"

96+ points Robert Parker: "Lail’s flagship wine is the J. Daniel Cuvee. The 2007 is living up to all of its promise when tasted last year from barrel. There are 850 cases of this 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from four separate sites in Napa (in Calistoga, Howell Mountain, Coombsville, and Rutherford). A dense purple color is accompanied by notes of graphite, licorice, black cherry liqueur, black currants, crushed rocks, spice box, and cedar. With Pauillac-like aromatic and flavor profiles, this opulent, full-bodied, rich 2007 reveals superb purity as well as definition. It may even grow in stature over the next five years, and is capable of lasting 20-25+ years. Drink: 2009-2034. (12/21/09)"

94 points Stephen Tanzer (International Wine Cellar): "Bright ruby. Knockout nose offers everything from liqueur-like black raspberry and blueberry to dark chocolate, crushed-rock minerality and captivating violet and rose petal notes. A repeating element of saline minerality gives the middle palate lovely definition and verve, with the ripe fruit element coming across as quite youthful. Finishes with a firm spine of tooth-dusting tannins and terrific slowly mounting length. This wine was "limp" for a while, noted Lail, but today it's showing beautifully. (16.4% alcohol; 75% new oak) Drink: 2019-2034. (May 2019)"

Producer notes: "100% Cabernet Sauvignon. The perfect weather conditions during the growing season allowed us to harvest amazing grapes. The Cabernet blocks were harvested in late September and early October, aged 20 months in 75% new French oak, then bottled unfined and unfiltered in June 2009. If I had to use one word to describe this wine, it would be ‘seamless.’ Complex notes of cocoa, charcoal, black fruits, and pencil lead give a sense of amazing complexity. Powerful and seductive, this wine lingers on the palate for more than 20 seconds. As the 2006 reminded us of Chateau Latour from Pauillac in Bordeaux, the 2007 would be more reminiscent of the great wines from Chateau Margaux. Vineyards: Howell Mountain and Oakville. 885 cases produced."
