Importer notes: "The Neckenmarkt bottling comes from 3 vineyard sites grown on limestone, slate and granite. Traditionally fermented for 1 month in oak casks. 15% whole cluster. Aged in a 1200 liter barrel for 18 months before bottling. Unfined/Unfiltered. In regional dialect Kolfok means an unconventional thinker. Winemaker Stefan Wellanschitz's family's estate in Neckenmarkt dates to the early 19th century, when this part of Burgenland was still Hungarian and not Austrian. In 2013 Stefan decided to deviate from the family's more traditional style and launch his own wines with a philosophy of natural winemaking combined with an emphasis on terroir. In the glass you’ll find a beautiful, deep crimson color and all the spicy, mulberry-laden aromas so typical to Blaufränkisch, accompanied by red and purple flowers, hibiscus, rosehips, black tea, and warm earth. The palate is fleshy but not flashy, with pepper-laden, grippy tannins to make it a perfect accompaniment for bigger foods. Think lamb burgers, grilled poblano peppers, or a simple grilled New York Strip steak."
