95 points James Halliday (Wine Companion): "Deep colour; a hilarious new label depicting said old bastard does not herald any change in the style of this wine, made from a small estate block planted in 1893. Rich, supple and velvety, it is able to carry its alcohol; it is chock-full of dark berry flavours. Drink by 2027. (8/3/10)"

94+ points Josh Raynolds (Vinous): "(from 114-year-old vines) Opaque purple. The nose offers a hypnotic array of dark fruit compote and floral scents, with complicating notes of incense, Asian spices and black pepper. Broad and sweet in the mouth, with palate-saturating boysenberry and mulberry flavors, seamless texture and uncanny depth. There's an unlikely energy to this weighty, intensely flavored shiraz that gives it impressive precision. The spice and floral notes linger on the velvety, compellingly sweet finish. Pretty remarkable stuff, but this is still a baby. (Jul 2010)"

94 points James Suckling: "This has such a different nose, with savory forest wood and plenty of spice, some dried cocoa powder, as well as violet-like elements. The palate has a drier feel with tannins really to the fore. There’s a concentrated blueberry thread that builds into the finish, which is quite long and pure. Spiced dark chocolate to close. Drinking well now. Drink or hold. (8/4/21)"
