94 points Eric Guido (Vinous): "The 2014 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Vecchie Vigne totally captivates with an exotic mix of musky red currants, allspice, dusty rose and a touch of forest floor that I find wildly attractive. It’s soft and enveloping on the palate, without a hard edge in sight, casting citrus-tinged berries across a core of brisk acids. Savory herbal tones come forward toward the close. This finishes structured and long, yet the tannins are sweet. The mouth is left watering for more as a mineral tinge and wild strawberry hints slowly taper off. The cool and rainy vintage helped produce a unique expression of Emidio Pepe Montepulciano, but one that is overdelivering at the moment. Drink 2024-2038 (Oct 2022)."

Emidio Pepe is a benchmark producer of Montepulciano and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo. It is a pioneer of biodynamic winemaking in Italy that uses no oak at all in the winemaking process; fermentations take place in cement and then are aged in bottle. White grapes are crushed by foot. These are some of the most ageworthy, legendary wines in Italy.

Gambero Rosso: "There aren't many Montepulciano d'Abruzzo wines sold at international wine auctions; even fewer have very old vintages indicated on their labels. If anyone has managed to reach both these goals, it's Emidio Pepe: ever since he began running the family winery in 1964, he has always believed in the aging potential of Abruzzo's most iconic grape variety. So he began to store his bottles right from the start, and has built up a tableau of the last 50 vintages or more in his Torano Nuovo cellar. (2022)"
