Lush and inviting, with ripe structure and broad shoulders, it is flush with a ripe, meaty texture and warming spice. Allow it another couple of years in the cellar. The bouquet is deep, precise and complex, offering up scents of red and black cherries, a touch of dark berry, fresh thyme, woodsmoke, pigeon, dark soil tones, incipient notes of fresh nutmeg and a gentle framing of cedary oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused, tangy and beautifully balanced, with a lovely core of fruit, excellent mineral drive and grip, ripe, well-integrated tannins and a long, complex and very promising finish. The 2022 vintage of this bottling will be in danger of drinking early, given its suave and sappy youthful nature, but the 2021 is a more reticent vintage here and this wine will probably not offer generous drinking until the tannins have truly started to soften up a decade down the road. That said, it may well end up being the superior of these two excellent years at DDO, once those tannins have relaxed! 2035-2085. (Jan/Feb 2024)"
