Producer notes: Ken began dreaming of a wine called Lucille the very first time he heard Lucy’s heartbeat during an ultrasound. From the moment Lucy could walk, she was in the vineyards, kicking up dirt, sampling grapes, and sharing our passion for the land. Freedom Hill Vineyard became her playground, with its tall, hanging trellis blocks of old, twisted Chardonnay vines. She would dart underneath them, chasing the dogs and tasting the fruit, weaving through the maze of vines. Her joy was palpable when she would exclaim, "Dad, I like the red grapes, but I really like the white ones!"
Ken's journey with Freedom Hill Vineyard started with his first harvest in 1995, and we be- gan sourcing fruit for Walter Scott in 2012. Initially, we had just a single acre of Chardonnay alongside our Pinot Noir blocks. In 2017, we were offered an acre of old vine Chardonnay, planted in 1995. We knew this block was extraordinary. We've worked closely with Dustin Duschee and his family to honor the vineyard's natural brilliance through limited yields and or- ganic farming. Each vintage, Ken and Erica select their favorite barrels from this cherished old vine block and lovingly bottle them under the name Lucille, a tribute to the magical connection between family and vineyard.
In every bottle of Lucille, we’ve captured the concentrated expression of old vine Freedom Hill Vineyard and the cherished memories that inspired its creation. Aromas of charred Meyer lemons and toasted sesame give way to vibrant notes of juicy mandarin on the palate, underscored by a saline minerality that leaves a refreshing, mouthwatering impression. This remarkable interplay of intensity and finesse carries through to a luxuriously extended finish, embodying the vineyard’s strength and elegance.
