Producer notes: "(50% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Meunier). This fifth edition of Extra Brut Extra Old is a blend of seven of Veuve Clicquot’s most prestigious reserve wines, from the years 1996, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015. This cuvée was crafted through a double aging process: first, the reserve wines are matured in vats on fine lees, then aged in bottle 'on lattes' for at least three years, until disgorgement, to achieve perfect harmony. Much like the creation of a perfume, the essence of these 'mature' or 'spicy' reserve wines brings texture and complexity to the blend. Nose: Fresh citrus (grapefuit, lemon); dried fruits (almond, hazelnut); patry notes (brioche, frangipane, toasted bread); floral hints (linden, lemon verbena). Palate: Lively and saline; citrus (grapefuit zest, lime, yuzu); light roasted dried fruits (toasted almond, hazelnut); gentle spices (white pepper, ginger); patry notes (brioche, toasted bread). 3g/L dosage."
Not yet reviewed; 4th Edition rated 93-94 points by Essi Avellan, MW: "(50% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay, 20% Meunier). Bottled at a gentle 4.5 bars of pressure — compared to the Champagne standard of 6 bars — this cuvée offers a softer, creamier mousse and lots of reserve wine mellowness and complexity. Composed entirely of reserve wines from six vintages (1996, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, and 2014) and bottled in 2017, it is gently dosed with 3/l of sugar per liter. The colour shows a developing depth. The nose is deliciously inviting, with charred nuances, crème brûlée richness, and ripe pineapple. On the palate, the mousse is super-smooth, carrying layers of reserve-wine opulence. Rich and complex, this Champagne marries generosity and finesse in equal measure."
