Venetsanos Santorini Assyrtiko 2017

91 points Mark Squires (Wine Advocate): "The 2017 Santorini is all Assyrtiko from a single vineyard (Giannas), unoaked and coming in at 13% alcohol. This is remarkable in many ways. It is gorgeously structured, powerful and intense yet still with unctuous texture that coats the palate. It is nicely concentrated as well as pretty delicious. The finish is impressively long. Then, there's the quibble. It has a smoky nose, which follows through onto the palate; I suspected reduction. The good news is that those nuances will often blow off with time or aeration. I did decant it, which I sometimes do for new Assyrtiko anyway. It was much better. Assuming it doesn't blow off in the normal course of bottle aging, opening it the night before, recorking and refrigerating it usually does the trick. Overall, I'm going to lean up on this because it is just so stunning in so many ways. Even with that quibble, it's the best I've yet seen from the winery. It should age well, perhaps better than anticipated, which is good, because it could use a little more time to come around. There were just 15,000 bottles produced. Drink: 2020-2027. (Apr 2019)"

Vinous Reverie notes: "Bright yellow color with green hints. Delicate, intense and complex aromas of pear, white flowers and citrus fruits. Dominant is the green bitter orange, with hints of mastic and fennel root.Rich mouth, oily, highly refreshing lemony acidity and characteristic saltiness. Enjoyable long aftertaste. Food Pairing: Fish and seafood, grilled vegetables, pasta and fresh or salty cheeses."
