96 points Wine Spectator: "Combines power and finesse, offering a firm, dense, chewy core of mocha-scented blackberry, cassis, crushed rock, loamy earth, cedar, cigar box and exotic spice, ending with firm, smoky tannins and a midpalate sweetness that adds a measure of intrigue and nuance. Drink now through 2030. 315 cases made. (4/29/15)"

95 points Robert Parker: "[$150 list] The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Tierra Roja Vineyard comes from a 4-acre Oakville parcel situated below the Dalla Valle vineyards in the eastern Vaca foothills. It exhibits an opaque purple color along with a gorgeous nose of loamy soil minerality interwoven with blackberry and crème de cassis fruit. Full-bodied with terrific richness and opulence, this is a great example from the tenderloin sector of Napa Valley. It should drink well young, yet last for 20-25 years. Drink: 2014-2039. (Oct 2014)"

93-95 points Stephen Tanzer (International Wine Cellar): "Dark red-ruby. Wild, highly nuanced nose throws off scents of raspberry, musky black olive, wild herbs, iron and dusty stone, all lifted by a floral topnote. Very ripe, dense and sweet, offering terrific depth and thickness without any heaviness. The fruits run more to red than black, with brown spices providing another aromatic element in the mouth. Finishes very long and sweet, with superb ripe, broad tannins. Outstanding potential. (May/Jun 2014)"

94 points James Suckling: "Gorgeous aromas of dark fruit, plum and iron with hints of clay dust. Full body, round and silky tannins and a lively finish. Tight and racy. Wonderful length. Drink or hold. (7/29/15)"

Producer notes: "The Tierra Roja cab is always a fascinating one to make since it is almost directly across the valley from To Kalon, yet comes out as a totally different wine due to its red, rocky soils and different exposure. This wine shows its typical black fruit dominated self with just a hint of bay leaf and evergreen. It has one of the most mouth filling attacks that you will ever try. Despite the size of this wine it still comes off as light on its feet from the acidity that this site retains. There is no other way to describe it than to say this is an absolute joy to drink. This may be one of the rare wines that is always drinkable and never goes into a ‘dumb’ phase, so drink 2013-2025. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. 315 cases produced."
