97 points Eric Guido (Vinous): "The 2022 Broken Stones is intense and tightly coiled at first, as dried black cherries mix with spiced orange peels and nuances of incense lifted by a whiff of fresh mint. It coasts across the palate with ease, energetic and spry, with mineral-inflected red berry fruit and a saturation of spice that emerges through the close. A cascade of violet inner florals and spice lingers as the 2022 tapers off long with silken tannins that resonate. Beautifully balanced, it does not show any of the negative drawbacks of the 2022 vintage. Drink 2027-2034 (Jun 2025)"

97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "One of the more structured, inward 2022s from Smith and a wine that's going to benefit from short-term cellaring, … It takes some coaxing but slowly gives up wonderfully pure red and black fruits interwoven with classic peppery herbs, violets, savory spice, and floral nuances. Beautifully textured and medium to full-bodied, with just about perfect tannins, it needs to be hidden for 3-4 years but is one hell of an impressive wine. Drink after 2027 (Aug 2024)"

97 points Lisa Perrotti-Brown (The Wine Independent): "The 2022 Broken Stones is composed of 66% Syrah, 13% Graciano, 11% Zinfandel, and 10% Grenache, and it is deep garnet-purple in color. Juicy blackberries, black cherries, and mulberry scents jump from the glass, leading to a core of candied violets, licorice, and charcoal, with a waft of garrigue. Full-bodied, the palate delivers a beautiful texture of chalky tannins and bold freshness, injecting energy into the rich, seductive fruit, finishing long and shimmery. Beautiful. Drink: 2025-2042. (Sep 2024)"

96 points Ian D'Agata Wine Review: The 2022 Broken Stones continues Saxum’s savory thread, echoing the style of the same year’s James Berry Vineyard, but with its own distinct personality. Aromas of smoky molasses, brown sugar, and warm spice overlay ripe black fruit, giving the wine a lush, richly extracted character. Despite its density, the tannins are impressively integrated, and a bright streak of freshness runs through the core, lending lift and structure. Bold yet balanced, this is a robust and compelling wine that remains harmonious from start to finish. 2026 - 2038. (May 2025)."

95 points Wine Spectator: "Alluring in its play of contrasts, with bright and elegant details of orange blossoms, fresh herbs and guava paste meeting darker, richer flavors of blackberry, fresh fig and licorice. A cast iron note chimes in alongside a secondary wave of fruit on the finish around broad, ripe tannins. Syrah, Graciano, Zinfandel and Grenache. Drink now through 2040. (Oct 2025)"
