92 points Jonathan Cristaldi (Decanter): "The 2001 vintage was crafted at Franciscan (the present-day location of The Prisoner Wine Co). A ruby-tawny colour with some brickening. This was the first vintage that Michelle Rolland served as a consultant during blending sessions. The nose is vibrant with vivid red berry fruit slathered in bacon fat, and the mouthfeel is surprisingly generous here, almost belies the delicacy of the aromas. A plushness, fruit weight, and concentration make me think this is good for another decade. It’s quite charming with heady dark chocolate notes, cranberry, blood orange citrus, clove, sweet tobacco, and richly laced with earth and black truffle. Crunchy acidity brings freshness and verve. Notes of cardamom, cumin, and bay leaf on the finish. 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot. Harvest: September 5 – October 11, 2001. 18 months in 60% new French oak barrel. Drinking window 2024-2033 (Feb 2023)"
