From Giuseppe Quintarelli, one of a handful of Italy’s most sought-after cult producers. Essentially a Valpolicella from a single hilltop vineyard named for a large black bird (the Merlo) perched in a tree overlooking the vines. The blend of old-vine Corvina, Rondinella, Molinara, and Negrara is passed over Amarone lees (this is the ripasso method) conferring an extra dimension of richness to the wine. Redolent of dark fruits, plums, and baking spice, the ’98 Ca’ del Merlo seduces with a vinosity and density remarkable for a wine that is, at the same time, not at all overblown or outsized.
