97 points Daniele Cernilli (Doctor Wine) (Sep 2022)
Two Glasses Gambero Rosso: "The Kurni '20 (Montepulciano) pours the usual, thick color, anticipating an explosive nose of black fruits, sweet spices, and a tangy whiff that lends freshness to its full-bodied palate - a very intense drink that's ready to face decades of evolution in the bottle, where its knotted tannic weave will integrate even better."
Importer notes: "Kurni is produced from 36 acres of vines in sandy soils on south-facing slopes. Head-trained (alberello) vines are so drastically pruned in winter that green harvests during the growing season are never necessary—the vines produce only a tiny fraction of the maximum yields legally permitted in the appellation. For newer plots, to keep yields low, Casolanetti planted at an almost unheard-of density—up to 16,000 plants an acre—leaving just about 20 inches between vines."
