94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A rocking effort that brings the goods, the 2016 Château Montviel is a tiny production cuvée based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc brought up in new barrels. Surpassing the terrific 2015, it boasts a deep purple color as well as a mammoth bouquet of blackberries, plums, crushed violets, and forest floor. Deep, full-bodied, beautifully textured, yet still lively and weightless on the palate, it’s the real deal and is a brilliant Pomerol to drink over the coming 15-20 years. Drink: 2019-2039. (2/28/19)"

94 points James Suckling: "Another velvety-textured 2016 Pomerol that shows richness and beauty. Full body with plenty of hazelnut, dark-berry and spice character. Long, long finish. Drink in 2022. (1/15/19)"

93 points Chris Kissack (Winedoctor): "A domaine in the hands of the Péré-Vergé family, located below the road which runs along the bottom of the Pomerol slope, although some of the vines are surprisingly high up, some quite close to Château Clinet. The blend is a classic 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, and the wine was fermented and aged in 100% new oak, the entire blend made by micro-vinification. It was eventually bottled in June 2018. It kicks off with a very fragrant and perfumed nose, fresh and floral, with blackcurrant, coffee bean and peony-petal scents. There follows a very competent palate, fresh and bright, with dried-fruit concentration, the flavour profile touching on dried blackcurrants, olives and black beans, with a fresh and tightly grained tannic substance. All in all this is a full, substantial, charming and quite classically styled wine. A strong result, with real midpalate texture and elegance. (Dec 2018)"

90-93 points Wine Spectator: "Textbook, with fleshy plum sauce and raspberry coulis flavors gliding through, picking up licorice, anise and graphite notes along the way. Stays fresh on the finish. (5/11/17)"

92 points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): " The 2016 Montviel is supple and racy, with plenty of dark red raspberry and plum fruit pushed forward. Mocha, espresso, menthol, rose petal and sweet spice build in this opulent, inviting Pomerol. Soft contours and silky tannins add to the wine's sheer appeal. It's great to see the 2016 showing so well. Élevage here has worked beautifully. Drink: 2021-2036. (Jan 2019)"
