93 points David Schildknecht (Vinous): "High-toned aromatic evocations of apple and pear are joined by hints of banana oil and quince preserves, pointing toward advanced and possibly very subtly ennobled ripeness (although Molitor insisted that this fruit was “healthy”). A garland of honeysuckle and heliotrope adds further allure. Site-typical vanilla mingles with marzipan and hazelnut paste to lend the ripely fruited, lush, glycerol-slicked palate a confectionary aura, an impression reinforced by more obvious sweetness than exhibited by any wine that led up to it in the present collection. The finish is compellingly persistent, albeit almost gaudy. Drink: 2017-2032. (Jun 2017)"
93 points James Suckling: "A big mouthful of cooked peach with a citrus freshness. Sweetness adds to the impression of weight and high acidity lifts the finish beautifully. (6/7/17)"
93 points Mosel Fine Wines: "AP: 18 16. This wine is still very much reduced but already hints at gorgeous scents of white mint, pear, yellow peach and minerals on the nose. It proves rather creamy on the palate (by Spätlese standards) as exotic pineapple and coconut give the finish an almost Auslese GK style. As such, it is a truly remarkable effort but wine lovers expecting a light Spätlese should stay clear of this. 2025-2045. (Oct 2016)"
WHWC Staff Notes: "While Molitor's dry wines are undeniably thrilling, his naturally sweet and botrytized wines are perhaps the most enthralling of his lineup. The Gold Cap Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese comes in at a mere 7.5% abv, so the residual sugars are quite prominent. However, the wine carries this weight with impeccable grace and poise. Unctuous and heady aromas of poached pear, honeydew melon, and elderflower ride atop the slightest hints of classic Mosel slate. The Wehlen vineyards are notoriously ripe sites, which is amply evident in the flavors of red Gala apple, pineapple, and tangerine. There is also an underlying spicy component reminiscient of clove, which again speaks to the terroir. While the sugars are prominent, the ultra-fine, filligreed acid provides a striking and beguiling balance that keeps the flavor profile from going overboard. Make no mistake — as expressive as this wine is now, it is still primary. At least 5 more years are required to bring about its fullest complexity, after which it will shine for at least three decades."
