16/20 points Jancis Robinson, MW: "This relatively young domaine was founded by Olivier and Corinne Merlin in 1987. They have recently been joined at the domaine by their two sons, Paul and Théo, and are now working 22 ha (54 acres), plus the 2.5-ha (6-acres) Clos des Quarts which is managed jointly by Olivier and his good friend, Dominique Lafon. This cuvée comes from the village of Fuissé, renowned for its broad-shouldered, long-lived wines. The vines were planted in the 1930s and sit on a southeast-facing slope. Whole bunches are pressed and then after a short settling of the juice, the wine is fermented and aged for 17 months in oak barrels, 20% of which is new. Smoky rich nose. Lots of fruit here but not much subtlety. It’s also a tad too chewy on the end for current drinking. (10/15/19)"
The vineyards are planted at a density of 8,500 vines per hectare. The average yield is 55 hL per hectare. Size: 0.6 ha (1.48 ac). Vine Age: Planted in the 1930s. Terroir: Southeast-facing slope at 8-15% grade, 200-meters elevation, clay-limestone soil from secondary Bathonien (Bajocian). Viticulture: Lutte raisonnée. Vinification: Whole-cluster pressing, settling of must in stainless steel tank. Alcoholic fermentation, malos, and in aged for 17 months in barrel (20% new oak).
