Joseph Bastianich & David Lynch (Vino Italiano Buying Guide) on Marchesi di Barolo: "Considered the birthplace of Barolo, which is said to have been first made here by the noble Falletti family in the nineteenth century. Marchesi di Barolo owns pieces of most of the great vineyards in the village of Barolo, including the majority of Cannubi, from which it bottles one of its better single-vineyard wines (there's also the more austere Sarmassa). Here's a great introduction to the smoky, leathery, earthy flavors of classic Barolo, and there's lots of old-vintage wine in the market, much of it very good."
