93 points Tim Atkin, MW: "A wine that never disappoints its legion of fans, this is less ripe and extracted than it can be in its youth, pointing to a slight shift in style as well as a cooler vintage. Aged in old wood, it has appealing fynbos and Mediterranean herb aromas, sinewy tannins, plum, fig and red berry fruit and plenty of stony grip. 2025-30. (2024)"

91.5 points CellarTracker.com community score.

91 points Monica Larner (Wine Advocate): ""Luddism" is the stated philosophy of this estate owned by Niels and Penny Verburg. The 2021 Bot River Shiraz is bright and linear with purple and red fruits, cherry liqueur and dried pomegranate. This vintage saw good rains before the harvest, with abundant crops and vigor. Each batch is fermented separately and finishes malolactic fermentation in tank before being racked into barrel. The wine spends two years in barrel, and in the case of this bottle, tiny percentages of Mourvèdre and Cabernet Sauvignon are added to round out the wine's texture. It is aged in French oak with 15% new wood for two years. (Jun 2025)"

Producer notes: "This wine is a pure reflection of the year’s growing season. Appearance: Crimson in colour which carries to edge of glass. Nose: Hints of African Violets, roses and Turkish delight with subtle hints of raspberries and red cherries. Palate: Juicy fruit and spice on entry. Cranbury, red current fruit dominates mid-palate balanced by firm tannins & telltale Luddite cloves and liquorice. Long finish with a touch of terroir driven saltiness with a fresh aftertaste. Alcohol 13.62%. 9,480 bottles produced."
