Wonderfully suave, mellow, inviting scents of raspberry, mocha, smoke and underbrush; the most resolved and integrated nose to this point of the tasting. A classic, harmonious Clos des Lambrays with impeccable balance and a wonderfully refined, silky texture to its flavors of red cherry, red berries, mocha and underbrush energized by high notes of pepper and spices. Not a powerhouse but this beauty fills the mouth while conveying a magically weightless impression. Finishes with sweet, perfectly supported tannins, a sexy floral quality and subtle building length. Two thousand one was a great vintage for Morey-Saint-Denis grand crus, noted Thierry Brouin, who told me he also loved the Clos de Tart. About as elegant as this wine gets. This vintage was the lowest in total acidity of my tasting but the wine hardly lacks for verve. And it has blossomed beautifully in the bottle. In fact, this is the highest score I've yet given for this vintage of Clos des Lambrays. Drink: 2019-2033. (Apr 2019)"
94 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "To my palate the wines at Clos des Lambrays have been improving consistently from vintage to vintage since at least 1993, but from the 1999 vintage onwards the quality took a most significant step upwards. The 2001 is a stellar vintage for this wine, and it must offer one of the finest values to be found in the Côte de Nuits for a grand cru. The bouquet is deep and stunning, as it offers up a superb, black fruity mélange of black cherries, dark plums, woodsmoke, incipient notes of game, a great complex base of soil, a bit of espresso and just a touch of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is medium-full, deep and intensely flavored, with a rock solid core of fruit, beautifully integrated tannins and acids, and a perfectly balanced, focused and very classy long finish. The 2001 is a superb Clos des Lambrays in the making. 2011-2040. (May/Jun 2007)"
18/20 points Clive Coates (The World of Fine Wine): "Medium-full color. Now fully mature. Lovely, ripe, fragrant nose. Very lovely, complex, delicate fruit. Medium-full body. Lots of depth and dimension. Vigorous but now velvety. Very long. Not quite as concentrated as the wines produced today, but this is nevertheless fine plus. (Issue #34; 2011)"
Clive Coates (My Favorite Burgundies): "Surprisingly good colour. Just a little maturity. Fresh, gentle, plump, fruity nose. Not a blockbuster but no lack of depth or dimension. Lots of fruit and no lack of class. À point now and quite delicious. (Tasted Feb 2011)"
