96 points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "The Domaine Lafarge 2020 Clos des Chênes is a gorgeous young wine. The bouquet soars from the glass in a sappy blend of black cherries, plums, raw cocoa, gamebird, summer truffles a beautifully complex base of dark soil tones, woodsmoke, loads of violets and a touch of new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, sappy, full-bodied and very, very pure, with marvelous soil signature, a sappy core, lovely focus and grip and a very long, fine-grained, tangy and properly youthful finish. A truly great wine in the making. 2040-2100. (Nov/Dec 2021)"

96 points Charles Curtis, MW (Decanter): "The wine has a voluptuous, dark blackberry fruit, with exotic spice notes and a dense, velvety texture. Notably rich in extract and length, this 2020 is a standout, even for what is a consistently impressive wine. The domaine parcel of nearly a hectare is at the northeast corner of this premier cru, next to Taillepieds and just across the street from the intersection of Champans and Cailleret - Frédéric Lafarge maintains it partakes of all these characters. Drinking Window: 2025-2060. (11/10/21)"

94-96 points William Kelley (Wine Advocate): "The 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes wafts from the glass with aromas of cassis, dark berry fruit and plums mingled with notions of warm spices, orange rind, rose petals and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's pure and vibrant, with lively acids, ripe tannins and a long, penetrating finish. It's a magical wine in the making. (1/20/22)"

93-96 points/'Dont' miss!/Outstanding,' Allen Meadows (Burghound): "(from 45+ year old vines that sit just above Champans). Super-fresh aromas are comprised by notes of black cherry, plum and raspberry coulis laced with exotic tea and discreet earth wisps. There is excellent size, weight and intensity to the larger-scaled and more muscular flavors that also possess notably fine-grained tannins on the hugely long and even more complex finale. This is potentially brilliant and very much worth your interest. Drink: 2032+. (Apr 2022)"

95 points Christy Canterbury, MW (TimAtkin.com): "Everything is right where it should be in this wine. The structure is sublime. The rounded palate is enlivened by crunchy acidity and the tannins are sleek. There's no straightforward evidence of new oak, just oodles of pretty red fruits and savory spice. The persistent finish is vividly mineral. 2025-40. (2022)"

94 points Jasper Morris, MW (Inside Burgundy): "Medium to deep purple with a lighter rim. Tight on the nose, potentially complex, one of the earlier picked wines. There is a slight earthiness, but much lighter than in Clos du Château. The weight of fruit and the balance particularly at the back of the palate are spectacular. (Sep 2024)"
