95 points/'Outstanding,' Allen Meadows (Burghound): "(from 45+ year old vines that sit just above Champans). The wondrous complexity of the aromas is genuinely remarkable with its ultra-fresh, ripe and airy red berry fruit, stone, earth and spice scents. Moreover, this impressive depth continues onto the rich, full-bodied and very serious big-bodied flavors that ooze dry extract on the concentrated, intense and vibrant finish that seems to go on and on. I very much like the balance and while this is certainly extremely rich and ripe, there is absolutely no sense of heaviness or undue weightiness. This explosive effort should be magnificent in time. Drink: 2024+. (Apr 2012)"
94+ points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "The 2009 Clos des Chênes is a simply stunning young wine. The magical and still fairly primary bouquet offers up notes of red and black cherries, red plums, cocoa, woodsmoke, a touch of gamebird, fresh thyme and a beautiful base of soil. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and seamless, with a sappy core of pure fruit, suave tannins, bright acids and superb length and grip on the focused and utterly complete finish. A great vintage for the Lafarge Clos des Chênes. 2020-2070. (Nov/Dec 2010)"
94+ points Fine Wine Review: "Last, the Volnay-Clos des Chênes is stony in the nose. The mouth shows a touch of gaminess but also some stoniness. This is a wine is attractive to drink now but has the balance to age for decades. (Issue #137; 2013)"
94 points Jasper Morris, MW: "A fine youthful vigorous deep red. The bouquet offers a little bit of fruit while retaining so much more for later. Sheer class, perhaps some ripe cherries, but not just one single fruit. This becomes classier and classier with time in the glass, but remains so youthful. Magical interplay between the fine boned tannins and the acidity. Tasted: June 2019."
93 points Robin Kick, MW (Decanter): "Deep and expressive, the 2009 offers a ying-yang balance of flesh and finesse with structure and power. It is in the midst of transformation, moving from primary and secondary notes into alluring flavours of forest floor and game. Despite embodying the ample personality of the vintage, its terroir clearly shows through which cannot be said of all wines from 2009. Approachable now, but it would really benefit from another 10 years in the cellar. Drinking Window: 2020-2036. (Nov 2019)"
