Elegant and structured, the chiseled palate is incredibly focused, delivering ripe Morello cherry, cassis, star anise and cake spice alongside taut, fine-grained tannins. Bright acidity keeps it beautifully balanced and energized. While it’s tempting now, this is still in its infancy and needs time to fully develop so give it a few more years. Drink 2029–2036. In fact, this vintage might be a little thinner than I remember past vintages being. But Sangiovese wears this slender style well and delivers lots of wild cherry and forest berry nuances along the way. You also get soft mineral tones and earthy iris root. This is classic Fontalloro, a wine that offers notable density along with the wilder personality of Sangiovese—partly from the Colli Senesi. As such, it is a somewhat rustic wine, but it’s one that will be a fine accompaniment at the dinner table. Leather, incense, tobacco and scorched earth complement a wine that shows the darker, wilder side of the variety. Pretty floral top notes appear with aeration. I would cellar this for a few years.
