The 2018 Muscadet Sevre et Maine Clisson is all tropical fruit, quince and honeydew melon – not what you would normally expect from this cool, northerly region of France. Despite its power, we are in Muscadet, which provides full maturity at just 13% abv, with ripe acidity still offering tension. It’s silky on the midpalate, leading to a tangy, salty conclusion with a gritty (in a good way) texture. Drink: 2021-2028. (Mar 2021)"
91 points Chris Kissack (Winedoctor): "The Clisson cuvée comes from 2 hectares of vines in the Clos de la Placelière, very close to La Fruitière. This is picked by hand, and vinified in a traditional manner, followed by the requisite two years on the lees and then bottling. This has a completely different and distinctive style, with sweetly dried citrus fruits, and a little toasted almond. The palate shows the same style, very broad with good concentration, plenty of grip, with a wealth of powdered chalk minerality, but then quite soft acidity running through the middle and finish. Plenty of grip here. I suspect it will develop for a few years, but I am not sure it will take a long period of cellaring. But then it might just surprise me. The declared alcohol is 13%. (Feb 2022)"
Producer notes: "Clisson, which comes from vineyards along the southern edge of the Muscadet region, is sourced from profoundly granitic soils that are some of the oldest in France, this wines have a lash of savory acidity and remarkable longevity. These vines are nearing 50 years old, and their roots dig deep into the granite bedrock making for rich wines without being fat but piercingly mineral above all else. Alcohol 13%."
