5 stars, Michael Broadbent's Pocket Vintage Wine Companion: "A very good '77. Maturing well; high-toned, 'herbal' bouquet; fairly sweet, a good ripe mouthful. Drink: Now-2020. Last tasted June 2006."

93 points Robert Parker (Parker's Wine Buyer's Guide [2nd ed.]): "This is an extraordinary house that seems to have been particularly successful with its vintage port since 1977.The 1977, still a baby, is fabulously scented, very rich and concentrated, and has a potential longevity of at least another 30-50 years. (Jan 1989)"

93 points Roy Hersh (For The Love of Port): "Only decanted for 30 minutes, certainly not enough for this Port, but that’s the breaks. Medium maroon hue, transparent core, with no signs of bricking on the rim. Lovely and developed notes include: watermelon, cocoa, anise, earth and mint. Actually quite impressive, but the palate just did not have enough time to evolve due to the short decant time. Others amongst us liked this significantly more than me, and I may have been jaded or at least disappointed knowing how much better it would have shown with another six to eight hours in decanter. The palate was filled with vibrant strawberry and flavors of licorice, herbs and milk chocolate in the background along with the warmth of spirit. The mid-palate was just poking out of its shell as we finished this fine Dow’s and while the tannins were a bit coarse, the acidity was just short of bracing. This VP’s significant strength was the profound bandwidth of its finish. (1/23/15)"

92 points Wine Spectator: "Medium brick-red. Aromas of coffee, prune and milk chocolate. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with a licorice, berry, custard and cream character. Firm and racy. Long and delicious. Firm and beautiful. Just ready now. '77/'85/'97 blind Port retrospective. Best from 2008 through 2016. (2008)"
