98 points Stuart Pigott (JamesSuckling.com): "What is more extraordinary about this great dry riesling, the fact that it’s so youthful at six years of age, or the incredible aromatic complexity? With each swirl of the glass it grows and changes, at first pear and quince dominating, then peach and pineapple, followed by mandarin orange. Very concentrated, but with underplayed power on the creamy, medium-bodied palate. Moderate acidity in this context, but such an elegant finish. The first vintage of this limited-production wine, which was fermented and matured on the lees for three years in large, neutral oak casks. Drink from release. (8/6/24)"

96 points Anne Krebiehl, MW (Vinous): "The 2018 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle R spent three years on gross lees in one Stück. After this, it is bottled and now released with two further years of bottle age. Cornelius Dönnhoff says this is a homage to his grandfather and the wines of the 1950s and 1960s. This barrel was destined for GG but stopped its ferment and was allowed to stay that way. An immediate ethereal lift brings lemon oil and cool, dried mint, expansive and scented. The palate is slender, fluid with lemon, cool with mint and smooth with age. This goes down like balm. Again, the 2023 is essence-like and glorious. While this has around 11g/L of sweetness, it does not taste sweet at all. Wonderful. (Dry) Drink: 2028-2060. (Jul 2024)"

For over 100 years, the Hermannshöhle has been revered as the Nahe's top-ranked site and the benchmark by which all other vineyards in the region are judged. It takes its name from a small mine, or "Höhle", in the middle of the hillside. "Hermann" is derived from Hermes, the Roman god of messengers and travelers, and the name likely hints at an ancient place of worship once located here. This site faces due south and lies 130 -175 m above sea level. Its soils are primarily blackish gray slate mixed with extrusive igneous rock, porphyry and limestone. For generations, this marvelous site has shaped our expectations for what fine wines from the Nahe can achieve. Fermented and matured in a mixture of stainless steel vats and neutral 10+-year-old 1200L German stückfass from Hösch.
