95+ points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): "The 2009 Volnay Clos Des Ducs is the only wine in this lineup that is playing its cards close to the vest. Weightless yet powerful, the Clos des Ducs impresses for its striking balance and poise. There is so much going on in the glass its hard to know where to start. Floral notes meld into hints of licorice, sweet red cherries and mint in this crystalline, totally gorgeous Volnay. Today the tannins are impossibly firm, so readers will have to be patient. This is far from an easygoing 2009. Drink: 2019-2029. (Apr 2012)"
95 points Allen Meadows (Burghound): "A fresh, perfumed and relatively high-toned nose of elegant and ultra-pure red pinot fruit that is liberally laced with stone and soil nuances merges seamlessly into rich, detailed and precise flavors that ooze a wet stone character on the energetic, hugely complex and explosively long finish. This is almost always a classy effort but in 2009 it is also beautifully stylish despite the tannins being notably firm. This has the concentration and balance to age for several decades and while it’s probably not going to outlive the ’05, it’s an unusually structured 2009. If you can find this stunning effort, buy it. (Apr 2012)"
94+ points Jay McInerney (Vinous): "Harvested 10-14th of September. The nose of crushed berries is exuberant, and in the mouth the sensation of explosive fruit is confirmed. A very dense and long wine, but unlike some 09s, it has great freshness and lift. Shows the precision and mineral underpinning that I expect in a great Ducs. This will live for decades, but unlike many Ducs, it should drink well by its tenth birthday. (Dec 2016)"
93+ points Stephen Tanzer (Vinous): "Good medium red; a bit less saturated than the 2010. More spicy and exotic on the nose than the '10, with its raspberry and mineral aromas joined by a light herbal element. Enters the mouth with silky richness, then turns juicy in the mid-palate, showing a very suave texture and surprising framing acidity to its flavors of liqueur-like red fruits and dried flowers. Quite powerful and long, finishing with serious late-arriving tannins. This is built for a long evolution in bottle. Guillaume d'Angerville told me that this wine started out huge, but then the élevage gave it focus, whereas the 2008 Clos des Ducs began lean and got richer. (13.55% alcohol; September 13 harvest; 40 h/h; 3.66 pH) Drink: 2021-2038. (Oct 2019)"
93 points Jasper Morris, MW (Inside Burgundy): "Lighter colour, quite angular, then sweeter fruit and a lover flowing finish. The one aspect in which the Lafarge Clos du Château des Ducs has the extra is in the bouquet but this had a slimline density about it, a wiry concentration of red fruit, and the possibility to build from here. This is very close to meriting a fifth star. (Nov 2019)"
Clive Coates (My Favorite Burgundies): "Fullish colour. Lovely ample, succulent, indeed lush nose. Ripe tannins. Very good grip. Already quite round. Fullish body. Vigorous but not a bit harsh. Very lovely fruit. Balanced, complex, and very long and fresh at the end. Very fine. Drink: From 2020. (2013)"
