93-95 points Neal Martin (Vinous): "The 2021 Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru belts out of the glass with blackberry, raspberry and crushed stone aromas, the most vigorous of the Premier Crus at this juncture. Wonderful definition. The palate is harmonious, poised, and demonstrates more substance than the other crus with a slightly confit finish that lingers seductively. This could age magnificently - a victory in a challenging growing season that deserves a hearty applause. (Nov 2022)"

91-94 points William Kelley (Wine Advocate): "The 2021 Volnay 1er Cru Champans is one of the standouts of the range this year, mingling aromas of dark berries and orange zest with notions of Indian spices and rose petals in an inviting bouquet. Medium to full-bodied, supple and sensual, with good concentration and an ample, fleshy mid-palate, it concludes with a floral finish. (Jan 2023)"

91-94 points/'Sweet spot/Outstanding,' Allen Meadows (Burghound): "(from a huge 3.98 ha parcel). A strikingly elegant nose is comprised by notes of pure, airy and cool essence of red cherry, spice wisps and a pretty suggestion of lilac. There is equally good tension suffusing the slightly less elegant medium weight flavors that possess a more refined mouthfeel than usual while delivering first-rate persistence on the austere, chiseled, linear and built-to-age finale. This will definitely require at least some patience as it's quite compact today. Drink: 2033+. (Apr 2023)"

93 points Andy Howard, MW (Decanter): "Fragrant and lifted nose with red and black fruit. Plenty of sweetness of fruit on the palate makes this a bit more approachable than Taillepieds for now. Long, savoury finish. This is the largest 1er cru at Marquis d'Angerville, amounting to 3.98ha. Here it holds two plots, both with southeast expositions, the higher located on very thin soil over a band of limestone, the lower on more clay-dominated, pebbly soils. Drinking Window: 2025-2035. (3/18/23)"

90-93 points Jasper Morris, MW (Inside Burgundy): "Champans and Clos des Ducs were a little less affected by the frost, with 15 barrels of each made. Just a touch paler in colour but easily the same density of red fruit on the nose as Taillepieds. A little bit on the raw side, and more oak showing, good length but less in place at this stage. Drink from 2028-2033. (Oct 2022)"

Bill Nanson (Burgundy Report): "(‘I never know which of these three is higher in the hierarchy – it depends on the vintage – that’s why I price them the same!’ – Guillaume d’Angerville). More aromatic width after the verticality of Taillepieds – and so inviting too. Yes, juicy – vin dangereux – faintly framed with a grain of tannin – super wine! (8/18/23)"
