The 2020 finishes dramatically long and youthfully tense, leaving crunchy tannins and a staining of primary concentration that penetrates deeply. Fruit comes from a vineyard site at about 1,000 meters in elevation above the Contrada Rampante. This 2.5-hectare site was planted in 1910, and more than half of the fruit goes toward this production. The wine offers ample richness and volume with dark berry, campfire ash, grilled herb and cola. 93 points Wojciech Bonkowski, MW (TimAtkin.com): "Cornelissen’s flagship red has a slightly higher production than usually with 3,000 bottles, testimony to the class of this very balanced, promising red wine vintage. It blends all the hallmarks of the Cornelissen style: staggering concentration of fleshy fruit, pushed ripeness, high alcohol, and bold tannic extraction with chewy, telluric tannins. The SO2 is low and the wine flirts with an oxidative, high-toned 'natural wine' expression, but doesn’t cross the line into straight funk. Against other vintages of Magma, the 2000 shows very complete on the palate with sour plum and pomegranate tang, though it could use a lighter touch in the extraction. (2023)"
