100 points Robert Parker: "One of the great modern-day Bordeaux, the 1989 Clinet still has a saturated purple color and a sweet nose of creme de cassis intermixed with incense, licorice, smoke, and mineral. As the wine sits in the glass, more blueberry and blackberry notes emerge, intermixed with some toasty oak, earth, and spice. This spectacularly concentrated, full-bodied, multi-dimensional wine is the stuff of dreams. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2025. Last tasted, 10/02. (Dec 2002)"

100 points James Suckling: "This wine has such balance and harmony. I remember when it was young and how the new wood and intense fruit came out, but they have finally come together in such a beautiful way. It shows subtle and complex character of plums, cedar, dried flowers, and earth. The texture or mouthfeel is beautiful as you taste it. (6/12/16)"

98 points Jeff Leve (The Wine Cellar Insider): "The nose is packed to the gills with truffle, chocolate, espresso, black plums, cherry liqueur, and wet earth. Opulent, deep, and rich, once the finish gets going with all of its layers of black cherries, drenched in spicy chocolate, it refuses to quit. Fully mature, a splash decant is all that's needed here. Drink from 2022-2034. (Aug 2022)"

98 points La Revue du Vin de France (Jan 2005).

97 points Neal Martin (Wine Journal): "The Clinet 1989 has a perfumed nose with intense violet aromas that explode from the glass, followed by macerated dark cherries, incense and creme de cassis. The palate is full-bodied with a velvety texture. It has an intensity that is second to none, a penetration that gives the senses no option but to heed its complexity and generosity. Compared to the magnum served last year, this bottle example is a little further down its evolutionary path with hints of molasses and mushroom on the finish. It is a great Clinet with doubt, although large formats will now be the real deal. Tasted December 2013. (5/29/14)"

97 points Falstaff Guide: "(Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon). Dark carmine garnet, vibrant colour, delicate edge brightening. Fine nuances of candied orange, delicate nougat, fine herbal savouriness, subtle red berry touch, liquorice. Very juicy on the palate, powerful texture, dark chocolate, very good persistence, black berry confit on the finish, remains persistent, pronounced in fruit finish, gains significantly with air, fine roasted notes on the finish, multi-faceted, but seems to have already reached its peak. (3/22/13)"
