96 points Robert Parker: "The 1988 reveals layer upon layer of honeyed pineapple-and orange-scented and -flavored fruit, vibrant acidity, high levels of botrytis, and a fabulously long, yet well-focused finish. It is a great wine. Anticipated maturity: 1998-2015. (Apr 1995)"

94 points Neal Martin (Vinous): "The 1988 Climens has a focused bouquet with lovely orange pith, quince, wet wool and showing a very light sea spray influence. The palate is well balanced with fine delineation, not quite as deep as the 1989. A more feminine and elegant Climens with a poised and quite persistent finish that just fades a little. Very fine. Tasted at the Climens vertical at the château in April 2022. (Drink between 2022-2045. (Aug 2022)"

94 points Richard Jennings: "From 375 ml - medium gold color; apricot, grapefruit, lemon nose; rich apricot, baked apple, cinnamon, poached pear palate with good acidity; long finish. (11/14/10)"

18.5/20 points Jancis Robinson: "Extremely rich – like the thickest of cream – but with crystalline structure and acidity still in evidence too. Very deep-flavoured. I may be underrating its likely longevity. Drink: 2000-2030. (9/9/11)"
