95 points Lisa Perrotti-Brown (The Wine Palate): "With 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, and 3 % Petit Verdot, the 2016 Pavillon Rouge from Chateau Margaux is deep garnet in color, with a touch of purple. It needs a fair bit of swirling to reveal notes of crushed black plums, black cherry preserves, and wild blueberries, followed by hints of unsmoked cigars, sandalwood, and dusty soil, with a waft of roses. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is so elegant, perfumed and energetic, featuring finely pixilated tannins and bold freshness, finishing long and mineral-laced. Drink: 2024-2049. (May 2025)"

95 points James Suckling: "The blackcurrant and floral aromas with brick and hot stones are tantalizing. Flowers underneath it all. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins with beautiful ripeness that highlights the palate. Second wine of Château Margaux. Try after 2024. (1/17/19)"

95 points Chris Kissack (Winedoctor): "The blend of the second wine is 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, and the élevage was in 60% new oak in this vintage. This took 26% of the crop. It was bottled in July 2018. It presents a beautifully pure and expressive nose, fresh with grilled cherry stones and creamed red plum, wrapped in the scents of praline and toast from the barrels. There is a great sense of purity here, of red cherry cream, and this comes across on the palate which shows a very pure and direct style of fruit, all red cherry and licorice, mixed with fine-grained oak and a pure structure of tight tannins. A very polished style, elegant and yet restrained, the structure perfectly in keeping with the substance of the wine. Long, fading slowly in the finish, but above all elegant. A top-notch second wine. (Dec 2018)"

95 points International Wine Report: "The 2016 Pavilion Rouge is absolutely sensational and one of the finest ever for this second wine of Château Margaux. Composed of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot this instantly impresses as it shows off its classic Margaux character with lovely aromas of ripe dark fruits, crème de cassis, graphite and peppery spices all taking shape in the glass. On the palate this is beautifully structured with wonderful intensity and concentration. It continues to impress as it takes on wonderful freshness framed by flavors of red and dark fruits that collide with coffee grounds and anise. The textural richness, depth and precision is simply astonishing for a second wine, and exceeds the level that many Châteaux strive for in their Grand Vin. This is an incredible release for Château Margaux, and while the stunning 2016 Pavilion Rouge will require significant bottle age, its gorgeous character is already quite evident is this sensational wine. Drink: 2025-2045. (Mar 2019)"

94 points Jane Anson (Inside Bordeaux): "Silky sweet tannins, creamy and delicious and so classy, this delivers lilting iris floral aromatics, with grip and lift. Impressive, last vintage with Paul Pontallier, who died in the spring of 2016. Alcohol 13.5%. Drink: 2026-2040. (1/22/26)"

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "With its dense texture and high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, this is an impressively powerful second wine of Château Margaux. Acidity and dark blueberry flavors are concentrated, with layers of tannins that demand aging. Drink from 2023. Alcohol 13.5%. (May 2019)"

94 points Jeff Leve (The Wine Cellar Insider): "Ruby red in color, this is what Japan must smell like when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. Followed by an array of sweet plum and earthy notes, this medium-bodied wine is elegant and sophisticated with sweet, fresh red berries in the finish. Balance, finesse, refinement is its mantra. The wine was produced from a blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, reaching 13% Alcohol with pH of 3.6. Of the harvest, 26% was used for Pavillon Rouge du Margaux. (Apr 2017)"

94 points La Revue du Vin de France: "Caressing, creamy, and powerful at the same time, Pavillon 2016 offers a beautiful smoothness on the palate and lots of fruit expression. (2020)"
