92-95 points Jasper Morris, MW (Inside Burgundy): "A blend of older vines or pinot fin from slightly younger ones. Vibrant magical purple, then the most gorgeous bouquet with a wonderful level of distinction and elegance from this great vineyard. Dark fruit throughout, very stylish, white pepper and spice, perhaps a touch of blackcurrant in with the raspberry, but this is brilliantly done and entirely balanced. The silkiest of tannins. (Oct 2021)"
92-94 points William Kelley (Wine Advocate): "Opening in the glass with complex aromas of peonies, rose petals, sweet berry fruit, cinnamon and forest floor, the 2020 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile de Vergelesses is medium to full-bodied, seamless and elegant, with a deep core of fruit, bright acids, melting tannins and a long, saline finish. It's one of the high points of the range. (1/20/22)"
91-94 points/'Sweet Spot/Outstanding,' Allen Meadows (Burghound): "(a mix of vine ages though the oldest date from 1938). Here the equally cool and restrained aromas are the most floral-suffused in the range long with an airy and spicy mix of red currant and dark cherry coulis. The mouthfeel of the intense and beautifully detailed flavors is more refined still while displaying even more evident minerality on the perfumed, stylish and classy finale. This is lovely and should age extremely well as it virtually always does. Recommended. Drink: 2032+. (Apr 2022)"
93+ points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "The 2020 Île de Vergelesses from the de Nicolays is an outstanding wine in the making, sharing the estate’s signature sense of elegance and transparency in this vintage. The lovely, black fruity notes wafts from the glass in a refined blend of sweet dark berries, black cherries, a beautifully complex base of soil tones, grilled venison, licorice, a bit of sweet stem tones, woodsmoke and just a hint of oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused and defined by its purity and elegant profile, with a lovely core of fruit, excellent transparency, ripe, buried tannins, tangy, well-integrated acids and a very, very long, complex and classy finish. One-third of the three hectares the domaine has in this vineyard are fully sixty years of age and seemingly helped resist the hydric stress of the weeks of high summer, so the wine has ended up with a very classic sense of balance. All this superb wine needs is time in the cellar to fully blossom. 2030-2080. (NovDec 2021)"
93 points Anne Krebiehl (Falstaff): "A really rather shy nose leads onto a fresh but fruity palate. Freshness takes over and allows the generosity and fruit of the vintage to display itself in all its beauty - tempered by that wonderful brightness. A lovely wine. (1/25/22)"
