94 points Anne Krebiehl, MW (Vinous): "The 2022 Riesling Sommerberg Grand Cru was picked in the central part of Sommerberg from vines around 50 years old. The nose is a subtle combination of lemon and ripe pear. The palate is juicy and has ripe pear juice flavors and notions of russet pear peel in texture, but both are made exquisitely fresh by bright lemon zest. There's a lovely interplay of ripeness and freshness with much verve and stony precision. The 2022 has a brief finish. (Bone-Dry) Drink: 2026-2055. (Apr 2024)"

93 points Stephan Reinhardt (Wine Advocate): "From two plots harvested at the same time, the 2022 Grand Cru Sommerberg Riesling opens with a pure, refined, subtle and subversively intense nose with spicy and herbal notes. Lush and intense on the palate, this is a rich and dense, saline and complex, very long and elegant Sommerberg with perfectly ripe and concentrated fruit and a long and intense finish. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in April 2024. Drink: 2029-2050. (Feb 2025)"

93 points Ian D'Agata Wine Review: "Vivid straw-green. White flowers, talcum powder lemon jelly on the explosive nose. Then similar flavours, with uncanny precision and uncommon depth for what is an entry-level Riesling wine, but you might say there is no such thing at this address. The long finish is lively and minerally. This had just been bottled two weeks before I arrived at the winery to taste, and yet it was just spectacular. The grapes come from two plots, one very old (planted in the 1950s, and probably earlier, but even Jean doesn’t know for sure) but Boxler finds these grapes express less of a site-specific character than those he culls in vineyards that are just as old but planted in the various sub-areas of his crus. This is why he uses these grapes to make a “generic” Sommerberg Grand Cru bottling, but you know, for an “entry-level” wine, it’s really deep, nicely ripe and layered. Drinking window: 2025-2033. (10/10/25)"

Importer notes: "Grand cru Riesling is arguably what Jean does best, even though his whole lineup surpasses expectations. He is fussy about his grand cru fruit: if it’s not the finest, or from the oldest vines in the parcel, he declassifies it (which also elevates his regional bottlings). Sommerberg is a cool site notable for its granite core, which translates to precision and verticality in the glass."
