As previously reported, Sportoletti abruptly disappeared from the market a few years back after simultaneously losing their US distributor and not getting reviewed by the Wine Advocate due to shrinking Italian coverage. All this has led to an incredible buying opportunity on a wine once referred to by the Advocate as a great buy at OVER $50!
The Sportoletti family has produced wine in Umbria for three generations, but it wasn't until they joined forces with then up-and-coming enologist Ricardo Cotarella in 1998 that the world began to take notice. Both the Italian and American press immediately embraced the wines, with Robert Parker awarding Sportoletti's flagship Villa Fidelia Rosso 94 points in Cotarella's very first vintage, then 96 points in the second, and so on. By 2001, Cotarella was named Gambero Rosso "Winemaker of the Year" and the wines continue to be as strong as ever.
The 2015 vintage is widely regarded as one of the better all-time in and around Tuscany and Umbria. This is most certainly the case with Villa Fidelia as it's among the finest bottlings we’ve tasted in our dozen or so years of selling the wine. We strongly encourage you to take advantage of this unique buying opportunity while you can as this is a one-shot deal direct from the winery and there is no more to be had.
