White, Rhone Blends - White, WINE

Shop the best selection of white Rhone blend wines at the lowest prices at Woodland hills Wine Co.

Much like their red counterparts, white Rhône varietals are typically blended proportionally to achieve a desired flavor/aroma profile according to a particular producer's estate style. White Rhône blends are usually based on three main varietals — Marsanne, Roussanne, and Grenache Blanc. Most white blends from northern Rhône will be composed primarily of either Marsanne or Roussanne, where Marsanne is considered the workhorse grape. Its ease of cultivation, resistance to disease, sturdy weight, and simple fruit profile make it an ideal main component in the blends of Crozes-Hermitage, St-Joseph, Saint-Peray, and Hermitage. The grape's basic complexity and lack of depth calls for the addition of its more aromatic cousin, Roussanne.

There is perhaps no greater yin/yang marriage in the white wine world than these two. Where Marsanne displays a rich, waxy texture with little in the way of acid or aromatics, Roussanne is a lightly racy varietal with intense aromas of white flowers, tree fruits, and fresh herbs. In a finished wine, the best of both varietals are on full display — dense, aromatic fruits like peach and apricot alongside vibrant minerality, all set over a medium-weight, waxy core with refreshing but gentle acid. Despite their sometimes delicate features, these wines are famously ageworthy, with some of the best examples showing lifespans of ten years or more. Viognier is the least common, but most prized, white varietal in the northern Rhône valley, and it is rarely blended, except on occasion in the brooding, meaty Syrah wines of Côte Rôtie and Hermitage. Viognier's ancestral home is the steeply sloped, warm climate of Condrieu just north of Rôtie, where it is always vinified on its own to produce wines with elegant characteristics of aromatic stone fruits and sweet white flowers, along with a steely undertone and gentle acid.

In the southern Rhône, where Marsanne and Roussanne are grown with much less frequency, Grenache Blanc is the staple grape in the blends, especially in the brightly complex white wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It produces medium-bodied juice with stone fruit and tree fruit aromas and flavors, but like its dark-skinned relative, Grenache Noir, it's a very hardy grape resistant to drought and windy, arid conditions, which makes it ideal not only for the southern Rhône, but particularly for the more rugged, harsh climates of the Roussillon, where the majority of it is grown. Several secondary varietals are also permitted in the southern Rhône. Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Clairette Blanc, Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains, Picardin, and Ugni Blanc all appear in varying proportions in the blends according to the preferences of the winemaker.

In the New World, these varietals are sparsely planted but have nonetheless witnessed an increase in acreage in a few specific regions. The Rhône Rangers movement in the United States is a consortium of growers who have taken it upon themselves to cultivate and make wines from traditional Rhône varietals, both red and white. Since the mid-1990s, plantings of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, and to a lesser extent, Grenache Blanc have expanded considerably in the Central Coast regions, especially Santa Maria Valley and Santa Ynez Valley in southern Santa Barbara. Australia also boasts significant plantings of these varietals, where contemporary growers are making interesting, if not necessarily profound, monovarietal wines from what are in some cases the oldest specimens of these species on earth.

While somewhat rare and esoteric, these blends offer up some of the most unique flavor and aroma profiles in the wine world.

Vaudieu Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc 2016  (#332905)

Rhone Blends - White from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Southern Rhône, Rhône, France

[ 95 points Decanter: SF: An attractive nose; chalky, orchard fruit, yellow fruit and soft spice give a great first impression. The palate is restrained, tight, but has intimations of impressive length and capacity to develop. LR: This is a refreshing style of Châteauneuf-du-Pape showing great complexity and concentration. However, it’s fun and vibrant with good acidity, which balances out the weighty fruit flavours. MW: This is a gentle yet vivid wine with some interesting stony aromas along with lime leaf and pickled ginger. It’s full and broad, but has firm acidity that really cuts through the rich, ripe fruits and wakes you up. The alcohol is perhaps just a little raised, but this is a big wine with everything in balance. It’s vibrant and buzzing. Drinking Window 2017-2025. Alcohol 14.5%.
