Languedoc-Roussillon, France, WINE

Buy Languedoc-Roussillon for the lowest prices online at Woodland Hills Wine Co.

Languedoc-Roussillon is another region which, in actuality, is more like two, perhaps three, different ones comprising France's wild frontier of a backyard, where the cultures and climates of the Mediterranean, the Atlantic, and the Pyrenees all intermingle. In the western Languedoc, Minervois is the standard bearer for quality, but select producers in Corbieres and Fitou are doing their best to take the region beyond its reputation for mass-produced, locally-consumed swill. Limoux is perhaps best know for its affordable, lively sparkling wines under the Cremant de Limoux AOC. The eastern Languedoc contains fewer well-known sub-AOCs, but among them St-Chinian and Faugeres tend to produce the most noteworthy reds, while Clairette du Languedoc and Picpoul de Pinet are the two white wines of distinction to fall under the AOC classification.

Roussillon is much more than a suffix, and it is as much a melting pot as you will find in France. Situated at the foot of the Pyrenees mountains, its residents strongly identify with Catalan heritage and the border between France and Spain is more of a quaint idea here than an official concept. This is France's hottest region, and its grapes typically ripen by mid-August, with most grapes devoted to the Vins Doux Naturels category of dessert wines. However, more and more quality producers are learning to work its rugged, lean Schist soils to produce characterful wines based mostly on Rhone varietals under the Cotes du Roussillon-Villages AOC designation. For fans of the next big thing, Languedoc and Roussillon should be near the top of the list or future exploration.
