Bordeaux, France, WINE

Buy French Bordeaux wines at Woodland Hills Wine Co.

Bordeaux is often synonymous with French wine, due in great part to the vast quantity of wine produced here, both red and white. While the quality of the wines runs along the entire spectrum, the top-tier châteaux make some of the most collectible, ageworthy, and famously expensive wines in the world. Five red varietals are permitted to be grown — Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. The red wines are unofficially grouped first according to their origins on either side of the broad Gironde estuary that splits the region.

Châteaux in Medoc on the west side, or "Left Bank", of the estuary grow primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, with the communes of Saint-Julien, Saint-Estephe, Paulliac, and Margaux serving as standard bearers of quality. Further south, the gravelly soils of the aptly-named Graves and its sub-AOC Pessac-Léognan produce stern, structured Cabernet Sauvignon wines. Official quality designation in the Medoc came with the historic 1855 Classification, which grouped estates into one of five "growths" or quality categories. To this day, the five "First Growth" châteaux — Latour, Lafite-Rothschild, Mouton-Rothschild, Margaux, and Haut-Brion from the Graves remain the most famous names in the wine world. The eastern "Right Bank" of the Gironde is classic Merlot country, where the chalky, limestone soils allow the grape to thrive. Cabernet Franc forms the remainder of most wines, with the châteaux of Saint-Emilion and Pomerol representing the finest examples.

White Bordeaux wines are made from either Sauvignon Blanc or Sémillon, or a combination of the two varietals. These are typically full-bodied wines, yet they retain a bracing acidic structure that allows them to age exceptionally well for white wines.

100 points Robert Parker: The harvest at Petrus took place between September 27 and October 12, and the 2010 finished at 14.1% natural alcohol, which is slightly lower than the 2009's 14.5%. The 2010 reminds me somewhat of the pre-1975 vintages of Petrus, a monster-in-the-making, with loads of… ...

87 points Robert Parker: The 1995 reveals less power and muscle than the 1996, but more elegance and fleshy, weedy, tobacco-tinged red and black currant fruit presented in a soft, supple, alluring, medium-bodied format... An insider's wine, Lanessan often makes wines of classified growth quality… ...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: This Peyronie family cru bourgeois estate is one of the rare properties in Pauillac that is not a classified growth. That alone makes it a good value. 90 points Wine Spectator: This isn't shy about its toast, with espresso and licorice snap notes leading the way, but there's vibrant acidity driving the sweet plum and fig fruit along, with a good mineral twinge on the finish. Drink now. (3/31/12) ...

93 points Decanter: Very similar to the 2015 blend, the 2014 however reflects a more successful vintage for the norther Médoc, with a more intense colour revealing both ripe fruit and liquorice spice. The tannins may be a bit strict at this early stage, but what focus! Mid palate density, already… ...

92 points and 'Cellar Selection,' Wine Enthusiast: Dark in color, this wine has sold tannins over rich mint and black plum fruits. The structure is firm, but the whole wine has enough richness to sustain the dry core and to offer 4-5 years aging. Alcohol 13.5%. (Jun 2010) ...

91 points Jeb Dunnuck: Mostly Merlot blended with 14% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot... It offers a perfumed, gorgeous bouquet of plums, incense, spice and hints of forest floor.
