What an aristocratic appearance! Round, crystalline and saline on the palate, this 2020 Auslese is much more openhearted and fruity as well as frisky and frivolous than it pretends to be on the nose. This is a really Catholic Riesling or a picture-book Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese. Its finish, however, is Protestant: rigorously linear, straight and with serious structure and grip. The bouquet is the quintessence of this great terroir, offering up a complex constellation of pear, apple, white cherry, vanilla bean, a hint of honeycomb, a gorgeous base of slate and a topnote of orange blossoms. On the palate the wine is deep, pure and bouncy, with excellent acidity, laser-like focus, excellent balance and grip and a very, very long, youthful finish. This is more tightly-knit out of the blocks than the already perfectly delineated Himmelreich, but it is every bit as stunning. 2035-2100+. (Jan/Feb 2022)"
