93 points Eric Guido (Vinous): "Dark and brooding in the glass, like cracking open an ashen stone, the 2019 Nero d’Avola Siccagno makes itself known. There are depths of blackberry, sage and spiced citrus beneath its smoky exterior. This fleshes out across the palate with prominence, silky and warming, yet with a mounting tension, as tart wild berries mix with hints of sour citrus toward the close. It leaves a coating of fine tannins through the lip-smacking finale, yet they fail to slow the 2019’s momentum, as inner rose tones and balsam herbs slowly fade. This really takes you on a journey from start to finish, and I love the nervous citrusy string that ties it all together. What’s more, the 2019 is in no hurry, and it should only get better through short-term cellaring. Drink: 2023-2029. (Jun 2022)"
Siccagno means "good wine" in the local dialect. It is 100% Nero d'Avola from two parcels on white limestone soils with vines averaging 35 years of age. Organically farmed and harvested by hand; destemmed but the berries are left hole; fermented with native yeasts. The wine is aged for two years in 3000-liter Stockinger oak botti before being bottled unfiltered.
