92 points David Broom (Whisky Advocate): "Sweet, with subtle, crisp, nutty oak, then comes fudge, ripe banana, and peach. The overall effect is like eating vanilla ice cream with toffee fudge and hazelnut sprinkles. The structure is thick and physical, the palate sweet and quite fat, with light hints of raspberry, fruit salad. A jag of acidity freshens the delivery on the finish. With water there's more toffee, and it becomes slightly more yielding, with less oak. For me the gold standard of grain." (Fall 2015)

92 points Wine Spectator: "Grain whisky isn't often bottled alone, but Nikka--which distills the spirit in an unusual Coffey-style still--has found success with this iteration, which has attracted ardent fans with its sweet flavors of toffee, nut and vanilla, undergirded by staunch oak. (10/31/19)"

This Grain Whisky is distilled in a "Coffey still," which is a very traditional and rare patent still Nikka imported from Scotland in 1963. The Coffey still produces a complex whisky with a mellow and sweet taste originating from the grain itself. Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky wafts of banana candy, tropical fruit, soft caramel notes, and an underlying note of sweet corn. On the palate, light vanilla, golden raisins, lemon zest, and crème brûlée notes come together in a flavor profile that is uncannily reminiscent of a fine, sleek bourbon.
