90 points Stephan Reinhardt (Wine Advocate): "Dörte and Meike Näkel's 2019 Spätburgunder offers a pure, refined and elegant bouquet of perfectly ripe red fruits, such as cherries and currants, intertwined with floral aromas. Round and juicy on the palate, this is an intense, wide and charmingly fruity Pinot Noir with an intense, sweet and persistently aromatic finish with fine salinity. The wine is still young but already delivers lots of juice, finesse and elegance. 13% alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in November 2021. Drink: 2022-2030. (Dec 2021)"
WHWC Staff Notes: "Now run by sisters Meike and Dörte Näkel, Meyer-Näkel's entry-level Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) is a classic study in terroir. Their vineyard holdings cover a wide variety of soil compositions, each of which seems to express itself in orderly progression in this wine. The veins of red sandstone that run through some of the grand cru sites are reflected in a dusty, iron-rich quality on the mid-palate, while the blue and black slate soils that predominate in the region imbue the wine with a taut, smoky, mineral structure. The steep, south-facing slopes of the Ahr Valley are evident in the wine's concentrated red fruit aromas of currant and Bing cherry, but at this early stage in its development, the palate's fruit profile is only just starting to come together, and it will surely benefit from 3 to 5 years of cellaring."
