94 points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): "Crushed red berries, mint, flowers and cinnamon lift from the glass in the 2012 Pinot Noir Estate Sta. Rita Hills. This is one of the most polished, refined and aromatically expressive wines I have tasted from Melville. What a gorgeous, radiant and totally sexy wine this is. Drink: 2014-2022. (Jul 2014)"

92 points Josh Raynolds (International Wine Cellar): "Deep, vivid red. Sexy raspberry preserve and blood orange aromas are complemented by white flowers and Asian spices. Silky and round on the palate, with tangy minerality lifting pliant red fruit preserve flavors. Balances opulence and vivacity and finishes sappy, focused and very long, with a suave floral nuance. (Nov/Dec 2013)"

90 points PinotFile: "14.0% alc. Released March 2014. 16 Pinot Noir clones. 40% whole cluster. 30 days skin and stem contact (7-day cold soak, 2+ weeks of fermentation and 1+ week of extended maceration). Aged sur lie in neutral French oak. Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. Appealing aromas of black raspberry, black peppercorn, spicy oak and old cask. Modest in weight with a good attack of darker berry and cherry fruits with accents of black tea, anise and savory herbs. A kiss of oak is complimentary. Nicely balanced with appealing elegance and up front appeal. (10/6/14)"

'Highly Recommended,' California Grapevine: "Medium-light ruby; assertive, herbal, slightly stemmy, raspberry and black cherry fruit aroma; medium body; supple, fleshy, black cherry fruit flavors; medium tannin; lingering aftertaste. Easy to drink now. 14.0% alcohol; released March 2014. (Sep 2014)"

WHWC Staff Notes: "I was recently invited to attend a seminar at the Four Seasons Beverly Hills, hosted by famed winemaker Greg Brewer. He was giving an in-depth seminar on winemaking at Melville Vineyards & Winery, which we consider one of the finest properties along California's Central Coast. He shared all sorts of concepts about soil, steam and evolution. Along with barrel samples from the 2013 vintage, we also tasted a vertical of Melville Chardonnays and Pinots from 2012, 2008, and 2004. The 2004 vintage was incredible and still holding up great. As Greg explained, "it was a year where everything fell into place." He compared the 2012 vintage to the 2004. I agreed with him while tasting them side by side. The 2012 definitely has potential and is drinking well right now. Antonio Galloni (Vinous) recently rated it 94 points! Great aromas of red fruit jump out of the glass along with some spicy notes. On the palate the wine shows flavors of raspberry and cherry with a long-lasting finish. The wine is ready to drink now, but will show even better with 30 minutes of aeration. A great wine to have in your cellar or for dinner tonight. Enjoy!" -Daniel Herrera, 8/15/14
