Three Glasses, Gambero Rosso: "The 1999... is perfect, and an effortless Three Glass champion. Deep garnet ruby, it regales the nose with exquisitely refreshing aromas of ripe fruit laced with sweet spices and dried flowers. The already well-balanced palate offers dense yet velvety tannins that make it quite irresistible. (2004)"

95 points Antonio Galloni (Vinous): "One of my favorite wines of the evening, the 1999 Barolo bristles with energy and classic austerity (in a good way) that are such signatures of this epic vintage. Laser-like in its focus, with bright flavors and bracing tannins, the 1999 is a textbook example of what traditionally-made Barolo in an important, structured vintage is all about. With air, the 1999 drinks well now, but it will continue to reward those lucky enough to own it for another two decades or more. Drink: 2016-2036. (Nov 2016)"

94+ points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "While much of the hype on the most recent string of extraordinary vintages in Piemonte has justifiably focused on the 2001s and the 1996s, the 1999 vintage has also produced some brilliant young wines, and chief amongst these would be Bartolo Mascarello’s Barolo. There is already a seamless refinement to the ’99 on both the nose and palate that is extremely rare in traditionally-made Barolo, and which is very exciting for the ultimate shape of this wine at maturity. The very elegant young nose offers up a mélange of red and black cherries, roses, licorice, delicate undertones of tariness, woodsmoke and fresh herbs. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, pure and almost velvety for a young Bartolo, with great structure and focus, a brilliant core of sappy fruit, firm, ripe and well-integrated tannins, and great length and grip on the potentially silky finish. This is a brilliant wine in the making, that may well give both the 2001 and the 1996 a run for their money. 2015-2050. (Sep/Oct 2007)"

93 points Antonio Galloni (Wine Advocate): "Medium red. Mascarello’s 1999 Barolo is a brilliant effort, offering a perfumed, elegant nose and lovely notes of red cherry fruit, menthol and minerals that flow onto the palate in a display of extraordinary purity. As it sits in the glass subtle notes of earthiness and tobacco appear, the fruit becomes more ethereal, and the wine changes from its initial impression of power to more understated, nuanced expression of Nebbiolo. Deceptively medium bodied, it also has the structure to age well, and will still be a compelling Barolo at age 30. Drink after 2009. (May 2006)"

93 points Wine Spectator: "Aromas of leather, berry and tobacco follow through to a full-bodied palate, with sweet and ripe fruit, silky tannins and a long finish. Beauty. The genuine deal here. Best after 2007. 1,410 cases made. (2/28/05)"
