94 points Bettane & Desseauve's Guides to the Wines of France: "Marvelous in its balance and aromatic charm, this offers notes of cedar and tobacco and all the nuances specific to cabernet sauvignon, with the creamy texture that is a mark of the chateau. Drink: 2011 up to 2022. (2011)"

94 points Decanter: "Menthol, cedar and burnished tar; utterly classic Médoc, which is at its height now but with plenty of life ahead. Very traditional -- you can almost hear the St James' members clubs rising to applause. Great St-Julien, with classic, subtle, firm fruits. Empires were built on this stuff. Drink: 2017-2027. Alcohol 12.5%. (2017)"

93 points Neal Martin (Vinous): "The 2002 Léoville Barton offers blackberry, tar and a touch of brine on the well-defined, focused nose. Medium-bodied and defined by its youthfulness and vigor, the 2002 is quite sappy, with good grip on the finish. I admit that I was astonished when the identity of this bottle was revealed. Recommended given its market price. Tasted at the inaugural Vinous off-line. Drink: 2020-2040. (Apr 2020)"

93 points Chris Kissack (Winedoctor): "This has a great colour, like so many of the wines from this vintage at this age, showing a dark and broad core, but still with a fresh red rim, with just a faint ring of maturing oxblood. There is smoked blackcurrant, juniper berry, rosemary and green peppercorn on the nose, vigorous and classically styled. In the mouth it feels gently textured, lightly polished, with a lighter and leaner style in keeping with the vintage, albeit with a supple textural base to it, as well as a little core of ripe and bright tannins, washed with fresh acidity. It has a peppery confidence, with interesting veins of darker flavour, including black olive and currant, but these are minor flourishes against the otherwise cooler style. Bitter, with a nice tannic bite in the finish, but without too much length. Good, and one of the few here which has some good mileage in it yet. Drink now, or hold up to five years, I suspect no more. (Nov 2017)"

92 points Robert Parker: "Even better from bottle than from cask, and one of the finest wines of the vintage, this dense purple-colored 2002 reveals wonderfully sweet notes of charcoal, fresh mushrooms, smoke, earth, leather, cassis, and cedar. Full-bodied, highly extracted, broodingly backward, dense, and deep, this impressively endowed offering is built for the long term. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2028. (Apr 2005)"
