98 points Stuart Pigott (JamesSuckling.com): " What a seductive beauty! This combines an ethereal lightness with enormous depth. The spectrum of the aromas is enormous, reaching from ripe peach to white pepper. This may have a couple of grams too much grape sweetness to qualify for Grosses Gewächs status, but it does have a dazzling mineral finish. Drink now and for decades beyond. (8/28/17)"

95+ points John Gilman (View From the Cellar): "The Hipping 2016 this year comes in at only 11.5 percent octane and Klaus-Peter Keller decided its optimal balance point was above the nine grams per liter of residual sugar allowed for Grosses Gewächs, so the wine comes with no official Grand Cru classification. No matter, as the wine is absolutely brilliant! The 2016 Hipping offers up a beautiful aromatic constellation of apple, white peach, a hint of grapefruit, wild yeasts, red slate, apple blossoms, a touch of lilac and bee pollen in the upper register. On the palate the wine is pure, filigreed and fullish, with gorgeous depth and nascent complexity, ripe, classy acids, laser-like focus and a long, dancing and vibrant finish. This is the outlier stylistically amongst the grand crus in 2016, but it is every bit as good as the top Grosses Gewächs bottlings of 2016. 2025-2075. (Nov/Dec 2018)"

94+ points Mosel Fine Wines: "AP: 37 17. The 2016er Niersteiner Hipping has stopped its fermentation at 17 g/l of residual sugar, i.e. above the levels for being legally dry (and qualify for GG). This develops a gorgeously backward and primary nose of yeasts, white flowers, candied lemon, sage, herbs and spices. The feeling of sweetness drives the pace on the palate at this early stage but the underlying feel of balance, finesse and elegance coming through in delicately fruity finish more than hints at greatness to come. However, this is one for the cellar as the sweetness does still need to melt into the wine. 2026-2041. (Apr 2018)"

94 points David Schildknecht (Vinous): "Tangerine, lime, Persian melon and Rainier cherry are fragrantly arrayed in anticipation of a luscious joint performance on this bottling’s silken palate. A smoky, lava salt savor and musky, narcissus-like floral perfume add to its seductive and mouthwatering inner-mouth appeal, while piquant hints of cherry pit and tangerine peel add delightful counterpoint on a buoyant, superbly sustained finish. At 11.5% alcohol and 17 grams of supportive but discreet residual sugar, this beauty – representing an amalgam of two casks – is stylistically very much in the mold of its wonderful vintage 2015 predecessor. Drink: 2018-2036. (May 2018)"
