93-95 points Jasper Morris, MW: "60% whole bunch fermentation and 60% new wood. Rich deep purple with lighter rim. This has extra density that requires spending time with the bouquet and feels a little stricter. It opens out very nicely to a sweet, dark red fruit, good energy, a few minerals behind, some finesse despite the pronounced impact of the style, long fine and complex finish. Tasted: November 2018."

94 points Tim Atkin, MW (Decanter): "Sylvie Esmonin's cellar looks out onto the Clos St-Jacques, where she has 1.6ha of vines. Hers is the darkest, firmest and most concentrated of the wines made here with plenty of guts and tannin, 60% whole bunches and 60% new wood. Built to last, it's a structured red that needs time in bottle. Drinking Window: 2026-2032. (Oct 2018)"

92-94 points Neal Martin (Vinous): "The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques 1er Cru includes 50% whole bunch fruit and matures in 60% new oak. It has an intense bouquet with notes of blackberry, blueberry, crushed stone and hints of graphite, the terroir showing through nicely here. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit and gentle grip. I feel the new oak taking a more backseat role compared to previous vintages, that allows the terroir to really show through on the precise finish. This is an excellent Clos Saint-Jacques from Sylvie Esmonin. Drink: 2023-2045. (Jan 2019)"
